The last couple of days in Cornwall were absolutely beautiful, with bright sunshine and blue sky, although very brisk mornings and evenings. The day we left it was all of 3 degrees. We travelled to the Cotswolds for Saturday night, not realising that it would be very difficult to obtain a room, as the locals and Londoners escape for the weekend. However we snagged a room at the Close Hotel in Tetbury (on line) and that was a win. It was a lovely village, the hotel was charming, newly renovated, so our room was beautiful and fresh. Apparently Prince Charles lives on the outskirts of this village -Highgrove? We had a drink at the Snooty Fox pub, and then dined inhouse, and it was fine.
Next day we drove in cloud and mist towards London, and it cleared as we approached Waltham Abbey, so we decided to go in. There was a baptism in the church, and we were invited in as it finished, the church was beautiful. We then had a drink at the Welsh Harp pub next to the church, and then drove onto Alastair’s place.
Since then, we have not done much except to try and help out wherever we can. Chaos reigns still, lots of plans never happen, and of course the dogs are in the middle of everything. Last night we cooked dinner for 8, and it was great fun, in the end. Hard to explain how frustrating the day can be, maybe when we get home.
Today we caught up with Peter St John Howe, retired barrister and magistrate, married to Alastair’s cousin.
Tomorrow we are catching up with Paul and Cara, who visited us in Oz about 10 years ago.
On Thursday we will go to see Castle Acre in Norfolk, if the weather is ok. It is cold here, 1 degree today, but sun shining this morning.
